When you thought you already knew everything about cloud computing, the new Amazon Web Services (AWS) technology comes up that makes life easier for developers and saves infrastructure costs.

The concept is known as serverless, but what is it about? Don't you need to use or maintain a server? Read on and find out what it consists of.

What is AWS serverless and what does it have to do with cloud computing?

If you are from the group that is still not very aware of what cloud computing is going, nothing happens, here is a brief summary.

Basically, it consists of “renting” computing services (servers, storage, databases, software, analytics, among others) through the Internet. The main advantage is that you only have to pay for what you consume. This way, you avoid investing in equipment, maintenance and personnel.

Simply, you hire a cloud service provider and problem solved.

However, you usually have the possibility to hire IaaS (infrastructure as a service), PaaS (platform as a service) and SaaS (software-as-a-service) services depending on your needs. The novelty is that, with serverless applications, you also have the opportunity to hire FaaS services (functions as a service).

AWS serverless is about that, running a feature from the cloud and on demand. An example of this technology is bots that jump when you enter a website for the first time, and that welcome you.

Therefore, serverless technology is ideal for simple applications that do not require an entire virtual or physical ecosystem, but consist of running a code (such as the welcome bot). Of course, the possibilities are endless and you can take advantage of this option in different ways.

Save costs with serverless applications

Accurate Use of Respondent

Unlike other cloud services, AWS serverless delivers exactly the amount of resources an application requests.

For example, with traditional cloud computing you would constantly contract 4 or 8 GB of RAM to meet both high and low service demands. In contrast, serverless technology only uses the amount of memory that the application demands at a given time, whether it is 2.5 or 4.8 GB of RAM.

Pay only for what you use

As you've probably read repeatedly, traditional cloud computing emphasizes that “you only pay for what you use.” However, if you request 8 GB of RAM, you need to cover the cost, even if there is never a demand on the resource.

With serverless, it's not like that. In this case, you pay literally for what the application demands. If the application demands 7 GB of RAM at a certain time, that's exactly what you will have to cancel. This is called elasticity: resources are adapted to the demanded levels.

So, during the months of low traffic on your website, costs will be lower than during the months of higher traffic. In addition, in general, you will also save costs as you would with any cloud computing, because you don't need to invest in an entire IT infrastructure to be able to launch an application (especially if it's a simple application that won't be resource-intensive).
